Remembering God's Loyal Love

We’re living through a pandemic.

This is probably not something we ever imagined we would experience, but here we are. The uncertainty and novelty intensifies the daily struggle between truth and lies, faith and fear, peace and anxiety.

Right now it’s vital to remember. In Deuteronomy 8, the Israelites were instructed to remember God’s faithfulness in the wilderness. God saw a broken people desperately lost in their sin, pain, and death and made Himself known as the Great “I AM.” God revealed His glory and faithfulness in the desert where they faced thirst and hunger and danger. He met their every need and showed mercy to them again and again. He brought them safely to the land He had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

We are not Israelites, but we must remember the loyal love of God to those who are in Jesus Christ by faith. God loves His children who believe in His Son. He is committed to us because of the finished work of Jesus on the cross. God sent His Son to save us from sin through the cross. If the Father didn’t spare His own Son, what do we have to fear now? If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, your life is hidden in Christ. You are raised with Christ. You are united to Christ. You are one spirit with Christ. You share in the life of Christ.

We can remember this of God our Savior:

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8. Jesus is not surprised or afraid. He is in control with all of His unchanging wisdom and power and goodness and faithfulness and providence. He is alive with all authority in heaven and on earth. Nothing can change Him or thwart His plans. He keeps us and cares for us because we belong to Him by faith.

Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. 1 Thessalonians 54:23-24. He is the God of peace who sanctifies us through suffering. He keeps us in the faith and sees us through to the end. He is faithful to finish the work He started in us. He will do it. He will bring us to glory. He will make us like His Son. Nothing can snatch us from His hand. We will share in all His glory soon.

Because of God’s loyal love in Jesus Christ:

  • We can be assured that we are forgiven and cleansed from sin (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).
  • We can be assured that we have peace with God and the hope of glory (Romans 5:1-5).
  • We can cast our anxieties on Him (1 Peter 5:6-7; Phil. 4:6-7).
  • We can believe and ask Him to help our unbelief (Mark 9:24).
  • We can find rest in our gentle Jesus (Matthew 11:28-30).

Remember the Lord and His loyal love:

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:31-39
